Australian Grand Prix Ticket Guide
![]() |
The Australian Grand Prix kicks off the 2008 Formula One season and Melbourne is a great party city for the Grand Prix tourist. Melbourne is a cosmopolitan city with unique cuisine (yes, you can eat kangaroo) and ferocious nightlife. March is an especially good month to hit Melbourne as there is a number of important local festivals both before and after the Grand Prix. Then there’s the indigenous wildlife, all a short trip from the city. On this page you will find information about the various activities and events on offer in Melbourne. By selecting from the hotels, flights, tours and race tickets offered below you get a far more flexible (and cheaper) deal then you’d get by buying a complete package. Yes, it takes more work, but that’s part of the fun!

Events in Melbourne in March
In addition to the Australian Grand Prix, there are loads of festivals and events going on in Melbourne in March.
- 7 March to 10 March Moomba Waterfest: A week before the Australian Grand Prix, the streets of Melbourne are packed with street performers, processions, beauty pageants, fairgrounds, music, dance and much more for the Moomba Waterfest, Melbourne’s most famous festival.
- 19 March to 13 April Melbourne International Comedy Festival: A month of comedy starts straight after the Australian Grand Prix. Find out if what they say about Australian humour is true.
- 21 March to 24 March Bendigo Easter Festival: According to the official website, the Bendigo Easter Festival is “a wonderfully rich and truly spectacular celebration of community and culture”. A true family event, if the race was a procession and the kids were bored, cheer them up with puppet shows, animals and rides, while you enjoy the greyhound racing and mongolian sword dancing, or whatever else they have lined up this year.
The best way to get a cheap flight to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix is by checking a price comparison site. Probably the most famous two are Expedia and Travelocity. Try them both for the best deal. Albert Park is in central Melbourne, so getting a hotel close to the track should not be difficult, as long as you book in advance. Traffic around the circuit is likely to be quite bad, so if you can get a hotel that is within walking distance of the track, you’ll really appreciate it. It is worth spending a little more the night before the race to guarantee a central hotel and then move out to the cheaper outskirts for your stay after the race. Hotels near Albert Park include the Crowne Plaza and the Grand Hotel Melbourne. Both Expedia and Travelocity have maps of Melbourne to help you make sure your hotel is near to the track (Albert Park is in the St Kilda district of Melbourne).
